How it works

Clean punctuation in three steps

1

Paste your text

Anything works: a paragraph from an essay, a cover letter, a caption you are about to post. Paragraph breaks are kept as they are.

2

Run the check

The checker fixes punctuation only. It never swaps a word for a better one, so the text still sounds exactly like you.

3

Compare and copy

Read the corrected version next to your original to see each fix, then copy it. Seeing the fixes side by side is the fastest way to learn the rules.

What the punctuation checker fixes

Most punctuation errors in student and work writing fall into a short list. The checker targets exactly those:

  • Comma splices: two full sentences glued with a comma ("The lab closed early, we went home.")
  • Missing commas after introductory phrases ("After the meeting we left.") and before and, but, or so joining two full sentences.
  • Commas that should not be there, like one between a subject and its verb.
  • Apostrophes: its vs it's, the student's vs the students', and plurals like 1990's that need no apostrophe.
  • Quotation marks with periods and commas placed inside them (American style), unless your text consistently uses British style.
  • Run-on sentences split with a period or a semicolon, and colons used only after a complete clause.

Why it never rewrites you

A full grammar checker or an AI editor will often "improve" a sentence you were happy with. That is a problem when the assignment is graded on your writing, or when the voice is the point, as in a personal statement. This tool runs on a punctuation-only instruction set: it may add, move, or remove a mark, and it may capitalize a word when a new sentence starts, but it never changes vocabulary or sentence order.

If a sentence is already correct, it comes back untouched, even if there is another correct way to punctuate it. Style choices like the Oxford comma are left alone unless you mix both styles in the same piece.

Limitations

Some punctuation depends on meaning only you know. "My brother Sam" and "my brother, Sam," are both correct; the second implies you have one brother. The checker keeps your version when both readings are plausible. It also does not enforce a specific style guide such as APA or Chicago for things like serial commas in citations, and it does not fix grammar or spelling beyond what a punctuation fix requires. For those, run the full grammar checker.

Example: one paragraph, eight punctuation errors

Original

After the experiment ended we compared our results, they matched the hypothesis. The groups average score rose in every trial but the control groups didnt. As the professor put it "the data speaks for itself".

Corrected

After the experiment ended, we compared our results; they matched the hypothesis. The group's average score rose in every trial, but the control group's didn't. As the professor put it, "the data speaks for itself."

Need more than punctuation? The grammar checker also fixes subject-verb agreement, tense, and spelling, still without restyling. Use the punctuation checker when you want the lightest possible touch.

Why trust this guide

The punctuation checker uses its own narrow instruction set, written by the PureWrite team and tested on paragraphs seeded with comma splices, apostrophe errors, and misplaced quotation marks. Before release we confirm that correct sentences come back unchanged.

FAQ

Questions, answered

No. It only adds, removes, or moves punctuation marks, plus a capital letter when a fix starts a new sentence. Your vocabulary, sentence order, and spelling style (US or UK) stay as written.
