How it works

A working thesis in three steps

1

Describe your essay

Write the topic, your stance, and two or three reasons. Add the essay type if you know it, for example: argumentative, school uniforms, against, cost, self-expression, no proven effect on behavior.

2

Generate options

You get five one-sentence thesis statements with different structures, so you can see which framing fits the essay you actually want to write.

3

Make it yours

Choose one, tighten the wording, and check it against the test below. Your thesis should change as your draft develops; treat this as a starting point.

What makes a thesis statement strong

Writing centers grade thesis statements on the same three tests, and every option the generator writes is built to pass them:

  • Arguable: a reasonable reader could disagree. "Social media affects teenagers" is a fact; "Social media harms teenagers' sleep more than their grades" is a claim.
  • Specific: it names the actual position and, ideally, the reasons. Vague words like "good," "bad," and "important" are replaced with what you mean.
  • Scoped: narrow enough to defend in the essay you are writing. A 1,000-word paper cannot prove a claim about all of modern education.

Five structures, one topic

The generator deliberately varies the shape of each option. One lists your reasons in order, which works well for a five-paragraph essay. One opens with a concession ("Although uniforms can reduce visible inequality, schools should not require them because..."), which signals a counterargument paragraph. One makes a single tight claim. One frames cause and effect or proposes a solution, and one takes a bolder line you can soften if needed.

Seeing the same idea framed five ways is often what unlocks a stuck outline. If none fit, add more detail about your position and run it again.

How to use it honestly

The generator works from what you type: your topic, your position, your reasons. It never invents statistics, studies, or quotations, so the evidence still has to come from your research. Many instructors are fine with brainstorming tools and many have explicit policies, so check your course rules. Keep a note of what you used; a thesis you can explain and defend in your own words is the only kind that survives the rest of the essay.

Example: from rough notes to thesis options

What the student typed

Argumentative essay. Topic: should college athletes be paid. My position: yes. Reasons: schools make millions from TV deals, athletes work 40+ hours a week on their sport, scholarships don't cover real living costs.

Two of the five options

1. College athletes should be paid because universities generate millions from television deals, athletes dedicate over 40 hours a week to their sports, and scholarships often fall short of covering actual living expenses. 2. Although some argue that college athletes receive sufficient scholarships, they should be compensated for their labor, as schools profit immensely from their performances and athletes face significant financial burdens.

Questions, answered

At minimum, your topic and your position. You get far better options if you add two or three reasons and the essay type. A rough paragraph from your draft also works, since the generator will base the options on the argument you are already making.
