How it works

Trim a draft in three steps

1

Paste the long version

A bloated sentence, a paragraph that runs on, or a whole application answer that is 80 words over the cap.

2

Click Shorten

The tool cuts padding first: filler phrases, hedges, and repeated points. Ideas, names, and numbers are never on the chopping block.

3

Check the count

Most text comes back at roughly 60 to 75 percent of its length. Paste it into the word counter to confirm you are under the limit.

How the shortener decides what to cut

Good editors shorten in a predictable order, and the tool follows the same one. First go the phrases that use five words where one will do: "in order to" becomes "to," "due to the fact that" becomes "because," "at this point in time" becomes "now." Next go redundant pairs ("each and every," "first and foremost") and sentences that announce what the next sentence will say.

Then it tightens grammar that hides the verb. "We made a decision to conduct an analysis of the data" says "We decided to analyze the data" in half the words. Finally it removes a point only when the text states it twice. If your draft is already lean, the shortener cuts less rather than start deleting meaning.

When to use it

Word and character limits are everywhere students and job seekers write: a Common App essay with a hard cap, a scholarship answer limited to 250 words, an abstract that has to fit in a fixed box, a LinkedIn summary, a conference bio. Shortening by hand is slow because you have to reread every line looking for padding. The tool does the first pass in seconds, and you spend your time on the judgment calls.

It is also useful for speeches and presentations, where every extra word costs time. Pair it with the speech time calculator to see how many seconds you saved.

Limitations

Shortening can only remove what is not needed. If a 900-word draft has to become 300 words, something real has to go, and that is a decision about which argument matters most. The tool will not make that call for you; summarizing does that, and the text summarizer is built for it. The shortener also keeps your tone, so a very formal piece stays formal, just leaner.

Example: 55 words down to 20

Original

In order to fully understand the reasons why the project was delayed, it is important to note that, due to the fact that the team did not have access to the necessary equipment at that point in time, they were forced to make the decision to postpone each and every one of the scheduled tests.

Shortened

The project was delayed because the team lacked access to the necessary equipment, forcing them to postpone all scheduled tests.

Shortening and summarizing are different jobs. The shortener keeps every point and removes padding; the summarizer keeps only the key points. If you need to stay faithful to the full argument, shorten. If you need a quick overview, summarize.

Why trust this guide

The PureWrite team built the shortener's editing rules from the classic concision checklist editors use: filler phrases, redundant pairs, buried verbs, and repeated points. We test it on real over-limit application answers to make sure no claim or number disappears.

FAQ

Questions, answered

Most drafts come back at roughly 60 to 75 percent of the original length. Wordy text with lots of filler shrinks more; text that is already tight shrinks less, because the tool will not delete ideas just to hit a number.
