How it works

Convert in three steps

1

Choose a direction

Words to pages tells you how long a draft will print. Pages to words tells you how much to write when the brief says "five pages."

2

Match your format

Set the font, size, line spacing, and margins your assignment asks for. The default is the most common brief: Times New Roman, 12 pt, double spaced, 1 inch margins.

3

Read the result

The page or word estimate updates as you change any setting, along with the words that fit on one page in that format.

Quick reference: words per page

For the default assignment format (Times New Roman, 12 pt, 1 inch margins, US Letter), these are the numbers the converter uses:

  • Double spaced: about 275 words per page. 500 words is about 2 pages, 1,000 words about 3.6, and 2,000 words about 7.3.
  • Single spaced: about 550 words per page. 1,000 words is just under 2 pages.
  • 1.5 spacing: about 367 words per page, common for theses and dissertations.
  • Arial 12 pt double spaced fits fewer, about 235 words per page, because its letters are wider.

How the estimate is calculated

Each font has a typical density for running prose at 12 pt, single spaced, with 1 inch margins: Times New Roman is the most compact of the common choices, Arial, Helvetica, and Georgia sit in the middle, and Verdana and Courier New are the widest. From there, the math is simple geometry. Text area scales with the margins, words per line and lines per page both shrink as the font grows (so density falls with the square of the point size), and line spacing divides the number of lines.

Handwritten pages are estimated at about 250 words per page, a common average for wide-ruled paper, which helps when you are planning an in-class or exam essay.

Why your page count may differ

Real documents have headings, a title block, block quotes, short paragraphs, and dialogue, all of which leave white space and push the page count up. A paper with many one-line paragraphs can run 10 to 20 percent longer than the estimate; dense paragraphs with few breaks run closer to it. Word processors also differ slightly in how they set the same font. Treat the result as a planning number, then check the real page count in your document before you submit.

Example: the same 1,500 words in two formats

Times New Roman, 12 pt, double

About 275 words fit on each page, so 1,500 words fills roughly 5.5 pages. A five-page minimum is met with room to spare.

Arial, 12 pt, double

About 235 words fit on each page, so the same 1,500 words fills roughly 6.4 pages. Switching fonts adds almost a full page.

Over the page limit? The sentence shortener trims filler and wordy phrasing so you lose pages without losing points. Under it? Every point still has to earn its place; padding is easy for graders to spot.

Why trust this guide

The words-per-page baselines come from typical densities of running prose in each font at 12 pt with 1 inch margins on US Letter, the format most US schools require. Every other setting is derived from those baselines with straightforward page geometry, shown in the section above.
